History

For decades the Mount Benson elementary school parents fundraised for a bursary they awarded each year.  In 2006 the parents decided by resolution to setup a dedicated bursary fund to ensure the bursary continued even if the PAC did not, or could not, fund-raise.   In 2008 the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Board of Education decided to close Mount Benson School which meant the parents needed to find a group to continue their effort, and who would be willing to establish and oversee a permanent bursary for their neighbourhood's school students.  The parents provided fundraised seed money and asked the Wellington Action Committee to coordinate and establish an endowment backed bursary which parents, students, donors and the community could rely on to perpetually support Wellington neighbourhood students, while ensuring that one of the provinces oldest neighbourhood schools will be remembered forever.

On August 20, 2008, the Wellington Action Committee signed the deed establishing the "Mount Benson Elementary School PAC Legacy Fund" with the Vancouver Foundation using a gift from the Mount Benson Elementary School Parent Advisory Council. The Vancouver Foundation manages endowment funds for schools all over British Columbia and is British Columbia's largest foundation which is governed by provincial legislation called "The Vancouver Foundation Act."
